Greyfriars Classical Academy
After completing the course of instruction through Greyfriars Tutorials in 8th grade, families may choose to attend Greyfriars Classical Academy (GCA) for high school. Unlike GCT, which is merely a tutorial service, GCA is a private Christian school, so students who enroll full time are no longer considered to be homeschooling. (Homeschooling families may take one or more courses at GCA as part-time students.) One of the unique features of GCA compared to other private schools in the Charlotte area is its structure, which resembles that of a university. All classes meet on some combination of Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and students spend Tuesdays and Thursdays at home, preparing for the next day's classes. This organization allows us to hire teachers who are experts in their fields, currently working in other jobs or vocations but able to set apart a few hours to teach a class one to three times a week. We love this model and the breadth that it gives our faculty. It also has the benefit of preserving high school students' connection with the home, as well as allowing them to participate in part-time jobs or other activities that might be unavailable to them under a traditional school schedule. And, no less importantly, it allows us to keep our tuition costs significantly lower than that of five-day schools.
Our curriculum includes courses in history, literature, mathematics, science, theology, aesthetics, logic, rhetoric, and foreign languages (currently Greek and Spanish). Each subject is taught from a decidedly biblical worldview by those who are gifted and trained in their fields and, in the classical tradition, we value integration of subject matter, Socratic discussion as a mode of teaching, and training in the rhetorical arts for all students.
Sending our children to a Christian high school is not, as some might suppose, merely "running away" from the world. We see the high school years as key in the development of young adults, and we are thankful to be able to give them the gift of interaction with faculty members who love them, love our Lord, and seek very intentionally to prepare them for college academically, socially, and spiritually. It is a privilege to be able to offer Christian families an affordable option by which their children can continue to receive an exceptional, Christian education throughout the challenging high school years.
